I attended a meeting yesterday at the Racine County courthouse focused on trying to find a location for another homeless shelter in Racine – one which won’t be perceived as so rigid in denying services if they choose not to work on getting sober. Kudos to the County Executive for hosting the conversation and blessings to all who show compassion and interest in bridging an acknowledged gap in services to our homeless population. I don’t believe the primary problem here is one of location. It is one of analysis and planning. I believe we probably have more services and places for our homeless populations in Racine than any communities our size with similar needs. It doesn’t mean there isn’t a gap, but there might be better solutions than another shelter that will be difficult if not impossible to sustain. I am sorry HALO wasn’t represented at the meeting. What do you all think?
